Alternatives

Pimsleur alternatives

If you are looking past Pimsleur, it helps to be specific about what is missing, because the alternatives are not interchangeable. Here are the ones worth knowing about, what each is actually for, and when to stay where you are.

Work out what Pimsleur is not giving you

Most people who go looking for an alternative want one of three things: a human who can correct them and explain why, a course with more structure than they currently have, or somewhere to actually speak out loud rather than tap answers. Those point at completely different products, and picking by review score rather than by which of the three you need is how people end up paying for a second app they use twice.

If it is the third one, that is the gap ConvoLive was built for: a conversation you have out loud, with a partner that answers what you actually said. It is free, and it is in the list below with the rest. The head-to-head with Pimsleur is linked at the end.

When to stay with Pimsleur

Pimsleur has been right about one thing since the 1960s, long before any of this was software: you have to say it out loud, and you have to be made to recall it before you are ready. That is the same conviction this app is built on, and the method genuinely works. The limit is that a recording cannot be surprised. It asks its question whether or not you understood the last one, and it will never notice that you have said the same wrong thing four times. If the audio format is what gets you practising, keep it — it is a better habit than most.

Try it out loud
