Stop Studying. Start Speaking.
Talk out loud with an AI partner that responds to what you actually say. Rehearse the situations you are really going to be in, and ask for a hint the moment you are stuck.
Conversation is what makes you conversational
No amount of books, videos, or apps is going to help you speak. ConvoLive's experiential learning techniques are based on the way we learn naturally. We learn by doing. We don't have the time or money for one-on-one instruction, but ConvoLive avatars can talk with you on your schedule. Not sure how to talk about your favorite topic? 'How do I say?' is like having a bilingual friend who will keep the chat going.
English, Spanish, French, Japanese, Italian, German, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese and more coming soon.

Complete real goals, just by talking
Order three apples. Ask for the total. A conversation opens with a short list of things to get done, and each one ticks off the moment you actually do it. Nothing is scripted and nobody tells you which words to use, so the tick is proof you got there yourself. It is also how you know you are done, which a chat window that just keeps going never tells you.

Say it out loud, and get answered
You cannot type your way through a conversation here. Every turn you take is said out loud, and the person in front of you answers what you actually said rather than what a script was expecting. Reading a language and speaking it are separate skills, and the one you keep avoiding is the one that stays hard.

Get the words the moment you freeze
There are two ways out and you will want both. A few suggested lines are always sitting there: play one to hear how it should sound, say it yourself, or translate it first if you are not sure what it means. When the thing you want to say is not among them, type that in your own language and get it back in the language you are learning, without leaving the conversation. Then turn the suggestions off once you stop reaching for them, which is a better measure of progress than any score.

Tap any word and understand it in context
Tap the word. It gets explained right where it sits, in the sense the sentence is actually using. Spanish queda is “it remains”, or “it suits you”, or “let’s meet”, depending on the line it turned up in, and a dictionary hands you one of those three at random. If it was the whole sentence that got away from you, that is a tap as well.

Describe a situation, get a conversation
How do I ask my girlfriend’s father for his blessing. How do I ask my mother-in-law how she makes her quiche. How do I explain a rash to a pharmacist in a country I landed in yesterday. The situation you are actually dreading is not in our list, so write a sentence describing it and get a conversation built around it.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is ConvoLive free?
- Yes. ConvoLive is completely free on iOS, Android and in your browser. There is no premium tier, no locked scenario library and no trial that expires, and we never ask for payment details.
- Do I need a microphone?
- Yes. ConvoLive is built around speaking out loud, so the app listens to you and responds to what you actually said. Any phone, tablet or laptop microphone works.
- How is this different from a flashcard app?
- Flashcard apps train you to recognise words. They do not train your mouth. Most learners can read far more than they can say, and the only thing that closes that gap is producing the language out loud under something like real conditions.
- Which languages can I practise speaking?
- Spanish, French, Japanese, Italian, German, Mandarin Chinese and Portuguese, with more coming.

The biggest update we've ever shipped. Lessons are now conversations, you talk from the first minute, and everything else in the app exists to get you through the next thing you want to say.

You don't have to quit Duolingo
Keep your streak, your Anki deck, your Tuesday class. Whatever you're using to learn a language, the part it's almost certainly missing is spoken conversation, and that part fits alongside everything else.

Nothing made me fluent until I couldn't ask where the bathroom was
Study abroad works for a reason that has nothing to do with immersion. It's also why a two year streak won't make you fluent. Why I built a language app that makes you speak first.
