ConvoLive vs Preply
A tutor marketplace where you subscribe to a set number of lessons a month rather than buying them one at a time. ConvoLive is free speaking practice with an AI partner. They are built for different things, and which one you want depends on what you are missing.

What Preply is genuinely better at
The subscription that people complain about is also the reason Preply works. Lessons you have already paid for get attended; practice you can skip for free gets skipped. If you know you will not keep a habit on willpower alone, buying the obligation is a sensible thing to do, and this app cannot sell you one. What it can do is be there on the days between, when there is no lesson booked and you still want to hear yourself say something.
Pick Preply if: Committing to a routine. A package you have already paid for, with a tutor expecting you, is the most reliable way most people ever get themselves speaking every week.
Where ConvoLive is different
Most language apps train recognition — you see a word and know what it means. Very few train retrieval under time pressure, which is the thing that fails you when a real person is waiting for you to answer. ConvoLive is built around one loop: watch a real conversation, then have it yourself, out loud, with a clear objective and an AI partner that responds to what you actually said.
It is also free, with no paid tier and no payment details ever requested. That is not a promotion — it is how the product works.
Use both if: you want a vocabulary engine and a place to actually speak. They are complements more than substitutes, and plenty of people run one of each.
