Getting started

Is ConvoLive free?

Yes. ConvoLive is completely free on iOS, Android and in your browser. There is no premium tier, no locked scenario library and no trial that expires, and we never ask for payment details.

Do I need to create an account?

Yes. You sign up with your email address and a one-time code, or with Google or Apple, so there is no password to remember. We never ask for payment details, and the account is what keeps your progress and streak across devices.

Do I need a microphone?

Yes. ConvoLive is built around speaking out loud, so the app listens to you and responds to what you actually said. Any phone, tablet or laptop microphone works.

Can I use ConvoLive without installing anything?

Yes. The web app runs in a browser at app.convolive.com with the same conversations as the mobile apps. Your progress is saved across every platform, so you can start a lesson in the browser and pick it up on your phone.

How it works

How is this different from a flashcard app?

Flashcard apps train you to recognise words. They do not train your mouth. Most learners can read far more than they can say, and the only thing that closes that gap is producing the language out loud under something like real conditions.

Does the AI actually respond to what I say?

Yes. Your partner responds to what you said, not to a script, so the conversation can go differently every time. Each one has a single clear objective, so you always know what you are trying to achieve and when you have got there.

What if I get stuck mid-conversation?

Ask for a hint. You can also use 'How do I say?' to find the phrase you are reaching for, and tap any word in a line to see what it means.

Can I practise a specific situation I have coming up?

Yes. Describe the situation and ConvoLive builds it — a job interview, a doctor's appointment, meeting your partner's family. If you are going to have to say it, you can rehearse it first.

How long is a session?

A single conversation takes a few minutes. Speaking practice rewards frequency over duration, so a short conversation every day beats one long session a week.

Languages and level

Which languages can I practise speaking?

Spanish, French, Japanese, Italian, German, Mandarin Chinese and Portuguese, with more coming.

Is ConvoLive suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. Conversations start with common, bounded situations and the first line is modelled for you before you have to say anything. You watch and read before you speak.

I can read the language but freeze when speaking. Will this help?

That is the specific gap ConvoLive is built for. Reading is recognition; speaking is retrieval under time pressure. The only way to train retrieval is to retrieve, repeatedly, out loud.

Privacy and account

What happens to my voice recordings?

Your voice may be recorded only to turn what you said into text and to evaluate your pronunciation. It is not stored after that. See the privacy policy for what is collected, how it is used and how long it is kept.

How do I delete my account?

Open Settings and choose Delete account under Account management. It takes effect straight away: your sign-in is revoked and your email address is removed from our records. This works on iOS, Android and in the browser. If you cannot get into your account, email team@convolive.com from the address you registered with.
