The bit that trips people up: nasal vowels and swallowed syllables
Portuguese has nasal vowels that English speakers tend to flatten into ordinary ones, and — especially in European Portuguese — unstressed vowels get reduced so heavily that words you know on paper vanish in speech. Reading fluency gives you almost no protection here.

Three phrases worth being able to say
Every learner needs these before they need anything clever.

- Could you repeat that, please?
- Como se diz isso?
- How do you say that?
- Ainda estou a aprender
- I'm still learning
Portuguese questions people ask
- Brazilian or European Portuguese?
- The two differ most in pronunciation and everyday phrasing. Because you can build your own scenarios, you can steer practice toward the variety and situations you actually need.
- Is Portuguese harder to understand than Spanish?
- Most learners find it harder to hear, even when the grammar feels familiar. That is a listening-and-speaking problem, which is the gap conversation practice is built to close.
