Introducing Story Mode: move to a new town and live in your new language

· The ConvoLive Team

ConvoLive now starts somewhere. When you open the app, you step off a train into a small town. You've just moved there, and you don't know anyone yet.

Every conversation is a place

The town is a map, and each conversation happens somewhere on it. You check in at the guesthouse. You order dinner at Lin's diner. You pick up a SIM card, register your address at the town hall, and open a bank account.

At the bottom of the screen are the next places you could go. Tap one and you walk there across town. When you arrive, the conversation starts.

Dinner with Lin at her diner, with the goals for the conversation at the top

The conversations work the way they always have. You speak out loud, each one has a few goals to hit, and suggestions are there when you get stuck. The goals match your level, so a beginner and an advanced learner can have the same dinner at the same diner and get something different out of it.

The people remember you

There are 20 people in town. Sam runs the guesthouse. Lin runs the diner. Emma makes your coffee.

When a conversation ends, you see what that person will remember about you. Lin serves you your first dinner in town. Later in the story you're back at her counter, asking why she laughed at something you said last time. Each conversation with someone fills in another heart.

We built it this way because practising with someone who knows you is different. You don't introduce yourself for the tenth time. You pick up where you left off, and you get to say new things.

100 conversations, one story

Story Mode has 100 conversations in order. You start with a room at the guesthouse and nothing else. Along the way you find a flat, meet your neighbours, get a job at the café, and see the town through the seasons.

Your journal keeps track of it all: how many days you've been in town, who knows you, and where you're living now. You start as a stranger. Keep going and you become a local.

Each day in town has a morning, an afternoon and an evening. The day moves on with each conversation you have, and the next day the story picks up where you left off.

Want a one-off conversation instead?

The scenarios you already know are still there. We call them Quick chat now. Open the menu and tap Quick chat to pick any situation, from a cancelled flight to a wrong charge on your bill.

If you'd rather Quick chat was your home screen, go to Settings and choose Quick chat under Practice mode. You can switch back to Story Mode at any time, and your progress in both stays where you left it.

Still free

Story Mode is free, like everything else in ConvoLive. There's no subscription and no paywall.

Open the app and step off the train.
