Speaking Mandarin Chinese
How to say the haircut is going wrong, in Mandarin
If you are in the chair right now
不好意思,好像有点太短了,跟我想的不太一样。
Sorry, it seems a bit too short — not quite what I had in mind.
If that gets brushed off
我想保留长一点。剩下的可以调整一下吗?
I wanted to keep it longer. Can the rest be adjusted?
不好意思 opens every awkward subject, softer than 对不起. 好像 — «it seems» — files your own certainty as a mere impression, and 不太一样 says «wrong» without the word. Say it while there is still hair to work with.
There is no chapter for this, and Mandarin hides a genuine grammar exam in the chair: the difference between complaining that something is a bit too short and asking for it a bit longer is nothing but the position of one small word.
If you need more than one line
softest
不好意思,我可以说一下吗?
Sorry, can I say something? The 一下 keeps it light — just a quick something.
neutral
我想两边留长一点。
I'd like the sides kept a bit longer. 留 — keep — plus 一点 after the adjective: the request shape.
neutral
上面可以稍微短一点。
The top can be slightly shorter. 稍微 — slightly — stacks another softener on.
firmest
还能修一下吗?
Can it still be tidied up? 修 — to fix — plus 一下, and nobody has to be at fault.
Two things worth knowing
You already know 短. The exam is where the 点 goes.
有点 complains, 一点 requests
有点短 — it's a bit short — puts 有点 before the adjective and states a problem. 短一点 / 长一点 — a bit shorter, a bit longer — hangs 一点 after the adjective and makes a request. The entire haircut conversation is these two shapes taking turns, and swapping them is the classic learner error: 一点短 means nothing, and 有点长一点 means you panicked.
Downgrade your confidence, not your complaint
Mandarin disagrees by hedging the speaker, not the facts: 好像跟我想的不太一样 — «it seems not quite the same as I imagined» — is a firm complaint wearing three softeners: 好像, 不太, and the appeal to what you 想-ed. The blunt version 太短了 is grammatical and lands like a verdict; in the chair, the hedge is what keeps the scissors friendly.
What Mei actually said
What you have to get done
- Say softly that it wasn't what you were thinking
- Explain what you actually meant
- Decide together what to do next
Mei
Happy with how it's going today?
You
Hmm… honestly, it doesn't feel quite right — it's a bit different from the effect I originally wanted.
Mei
Thank you for telling me; take your time and tell me what effect you originally wanted.
You
What I originally wanted was natural layers, length kept around the shoulders, and the sides not thinned too much; it already looks a bit short and thin now — could we pause and work out together how to adjust?
Mei
Of course, let's stop and check; I'm sorry it went short and thin — I'll adjust it to your wishes as best I can.
The whole conversation, unedited
A real run in the app, nothing scripted on Mei's side. The transcript above is taken from this recording, and the objectives tick off on screen as they are met.
Turn sound on to hear it.
Now say it yourself
Reading that is not the same as producing it with someone waiting, which is the entire difficulty. You can have this exact conversation in the app: Mei is a third of the way through, and you have three things to get done.
It is free, it takes about a minute to start, and the first attempt is allowed to be terrible.
